We’ve had a number of customers who have been contacted by phone, supposedly from Microsoft advising them that there is a problem with their computer and asking them to sign up so the phone caller can access the computer and repair the fault. We suggest that you take no action other than hang up the phone! If you are in any doubt about any issue you may be having with your computer contact you IT support or computer supplier.

Happy New Year! 2011 is looking like an interesting year for IT. Will Facebook float on the stock market? When Google originally floated in 2004 its shares were 85 dollars, they are now over 600 dollars. Will Twitter find a business case? Will Apple remain one of America’s top valued companies and grow again this year? When you are finished thinking about these, you need to ask what are you doing with technology this year?

The Christmas period saw an increase in online sales again, because of the snow and difficult travel conditions, many people bought online. Some shops in the UK reported increased New Year’s sales online when store sales were down. If you are not selling online then you should be considering it; through your own ecommerce site, Facebook, Amazon, Ebay, there are a host of ways to sell online make sure and make it one of your 2011 resolutions! Don’t forget that the UK vat rate has gone up to 20% which makes Irish online retailers more competitive in the UK market.

Don’t forget about updating your website and social media in 2011, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube if you have them then use and monitor them if not consider closing them down. Ensure you use secure passwords, social media accounts can be hijacked so monitor accounts for unusual comments, users or postings. Use your social media to link back to your site – for competitions, information or product updates. If you have kids who use social media, make sure they don’t make their password known unintentionally!

You will hear a lot more about clouding computing this year, remote access and storage of information/data. Coupled with the ongoing developments in mobile devices cloud, computing will take the hassle out of access, backup and security of information including emails.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2011
