Benhaffaf Twins

We had a great time during the bank holiday weekend with the Benhaffaf family, who had come to Carrickmacross for the Lion’s Twin(s)+ Parade. Angie, Hassan and Hussein lead the parade in a horse drawn carriage and received a very warm welcome from the crowds gathered.

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte today announced a new Rural Broadband Scheme which aims to identify the remaining individual premises in rural Ireland that are unable to obtain a broadband service and to provide a service to those premises where requested. This Scheme will be carried out in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under the Rural Development Programme co-funded by the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development.
The Scheme aims to ensure that universal broadband access is provided in Ireland by the end of 2012. While the completion of the Government’s National Broadband Scheme (NBS) means that broadband services are now available throughout the country, there are remaining un-served rural premises which could not be included in the NBS or which are difficult to reach for mainly technical reasons. The Rural Broadband Scheme is designed to identify those premises through a public application process and, ultimately, to bring a broadband service to them either through existing private sector service providers or through a service provider procured by Government.
The Scheme aims to identify the premises that cannot currently obtain a service and once all of these premises have been identified, to ascertain whether existing telecommunications operators can provide a service directly to these premises. If an existing service provider cannot be identified, the Department will seek to procure such a service. The combination of private and public sector programmes in the broadband market will ensure that Ireland reaches the EU target of ubiquitous basic broadband access ahead of the 2013 deadline.
The Rural Broadband Scheme will help promote economic and social development in such areas. It will be of particular importance to small scale rural enterprises who will be able to trade their goods and services over the internet. This Scheme will ensure that the remainder of rural premises will be able to get a broadband service and will make broadband available to anyone who wants it by the end of 2012.”

Carrickmacross Lace has hit the fashion headlines across the world today. With the relevation that Kate Middleton’s wedding dress pattern was fashioned from it:

The stunning lace pattern on the bride’s ensemble is known as the Irish Carrickmacross, an ornate appliqué form of hand-made lace that was made for her using a combination French Chantilly lace and English Cluny lace. Carrickmacross lace is an Irish embroidery tradition that dates to 1820.

Every year Enterprise Boards around the country hold county finals for enterprise student awards. Students from 3 different age brackets take part in an exhibition to display their mini company or student enterprise idea. These are then judged by a panel of judges and one from each category is sent forward to the national awards. This year was a first for a national award for County Louth when Awe Wish took first place in the Junior category at national level see LCEB news. So well done to all who took part, Peggy McGlynn for all her organising with schools in Louth and to my fellow judges at this year’s county level!

I recently lost my iphone, I’ve lost it many times before but usually under the seat of the car, down the side of the sofa or in a coat pocket. This time however I had really lost it, I had tried to triangulate it and looked up all the options for potentially tracking it via GPS, blue tooth and wireless signal all to no avail. So after two days of sporadic searching and somewhat frustrated I give up and ordered a new one. And then today I decided I’d try the garda station, and there it was shattered screen and all – I had already broken it three times to date but thankfully hadn’t repaired it.
So I’d just like to say… thanks to the person who handed it, it reinforced my opinion that most people are inherently decent and good, back up your phone information because most of them now contain more than just contacts, consider using tracking devices such as http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/find-my-iphone.html, and it is possible to live without a mobile (I don’t know for how long though & apologies to anyone who thought I was ignoring their text & calls!)

We recently redeveloped the Lion’s Club Ireland website – http://www.lionsclubs.ie/. The site has four regional Facebook pages embedded, with links to Twitter, Youtube an Flickr. The president Mary McAleese attended this year’s Convention and you can read her address to the convention on the website.

The Lion’s Club is a world wide voluntary organisation, with almost 3000 members in Ireland, which fund raises for local and international causes. The Carrickmacross Lion’s Club has recently launched it’s Twin(s) + Parade registration, which will take place in Carrickmacross on Saturday the 4th of June, if you are a twin or triplet and would like to take part then register online at Carrickmacross Lion’s Twin(s) + Parade

Enterprise Ireland will hold an evening workshop – ‘EnterpriseSTART’ on Tuesday 15th March from 4pm – 9pm in the Enterprise Ireland Boardroom, Dundalk.

Enterprise Ireland are seeking entrepreneurs with a new business idea in either manufacturing or International Traded service sector, and who can demonstrate that their idea is innovative and with the potential to export.

Places are limited to 10 participants and the Workshop is free.

The workshop will concentrate on all aspects of setting up and running a business. It will cover Market Validation, Market Proposition, Unique Selling point etc. There will be a speaker from Enterprise Ireland to speak about what Enterprise Ireland can do for new start up businesses. An experienced Entrepreneur will give a 15 minute Presentation on their experiences of setting up a business and, also a speaker from the Regional Development Centre at Dundalk Institute of Technology.
